Cimicifuga, also known as Black Cohosh or Bugbane Rhizome, is a traditional Chinese herb that belongs to the category of "Cool, Acrid Surface Releasing" herbs. Its pharmaceutical name is Cimicifugae Rhizoma, and it is also referred to as Sheng Ma.
In terms of its nature, Cimicifuga is sweet and spicy, and is considered to be slightly cold in temperature. It targets the Large Intestine, Lung, Spleen, and Stomach channels in the body.
Cimicifuga is commonly used to discharge exterior conditions and vent measles, raise yang and lift the sunken, and clear fire toxins. The recommended dosage for this herb is between 3-9g.
However, there are some precautions and contraindications to be aware of when using Cimicifuga. It should not be used by individuals with breathing difficulties, upper excess and lower deficiency. Additionally, it should not be used in cases of floating yang with yin deficiency, wheezing and fullness in the chest with a sense of qi rebelling upward, and measles after the rash has been expressed.
